IGK VIC Headquarters held their annual Spring camp at Eumeralla Scout Camp at Anglesea Fri 26th Oct to Sun 28th Oct and it was a stunning success.
Training began after dinner on Friday night and continued through the weekend including the traditional dawn ocean training at Point Roadknight early on Sunday morning.
Ocean training generally includes performing Sanchin Kata and awase kumite in the water where students gain experience of heightened concentration, awareness of the cold temperatures without being affected by it, focus and generating group spirit and energy.
John Ross Shihan and Lambros Kallianiotis Shidoin covered the syllabus with kihon ido (basic manoeuvres), kata and all aspects of karate required for end of year gradings.
An interesting and new lesson for some is the principle of transferring body weight into technique through kihon ido, kata and how to use it in kumite.
The camp was well catered for and no one went hungry. If anything it was hard not to eat too much between sessions!
Great spirit and friendship was shared with all junior levels well supported and helped by seniors. It is encouraging to have growing numbers of women and mature age students that attend and do their best to keep up.
The tradition of camps at Anglesea is rich in the club’s history with Tino Ceberano Shihan having hosted 150 karatekas at the 1982 national camp and Goshi Yamaguchi Shihan attending the black belt grading that lasted until the early hours of the morning.
